5 Signs Your Tree Needs Professional Attention

Why Tree Health Matters

Trees are one of the most valuable assets on your property. A mature, healthy tree can add thousands of dollars to your home's value while providing shade, beauty, and environmental benefits. But when a tree becomes unhealthy or structurally compromised, it can become a serious hazard.

Here are the five most common signs that it's time to call a certified arborist.

1. Dead or Hanging Branches

Dead branches are more than just an eyesore. They can fall without warning, damaging your home, vehicles, or injuring someone on your property. Look for branches that have lost their bark, have no leaves during the growing season, or appear brittle and dry.

What to do: Never attempt to remove large dead branches yourself. A professional arborist has the equipment and training to safely remove them without damaging the rest of the tree.

2. Leaning Trunk

While some trees naturally grow at an angle, a sudden lean is a red flag. This can indicate root damage, soil erosion, or internal decay. A leaning tree is at high risk of falling, especially during storms.

What to do: If you notice a new lean in any of your trees, call an arborist immediately for an assessment.

3. Fungal Growth at the Base

Mushrooms or other fungal growth at the base of your tree often indicate internal decay. The roots or trunk may be rotting from the inside out, even if the tree looks healthy on the outside.

What to do: Don't ignore mushrooms growing around your tree's base. Have a professional evaluate the extent of the decay.

4. Cracks in the Trunk

Deep cracks or splits in the trunk can compromise the tree's structural integrity. These can be caused by storm damage, frost, or disease. A cracked trunk is more likely to split and fall.

What to do: Document any cracks you notice and schedule an arborist visit. Some cracks can be managed with cabling and bracing.

5. Excessive Leaf Drop or Discoloration

If your tree is dropping leaves outside of fall, or the leaves are turning yellow or brown prematurely, it may be suffering from disease, pest infestation, or root damage.

What to do: Early intervention is key. A professional can diagnose the issue and recommend treatment before it's too late.

When in Doubt, Call a Professional

Tree care is not a DIY project. Working with large trees is dangerous, and improper pruning or removal can cause more harm than good. If you notice any of these signs, contact Harrisburg Tree Service for a free assessment.
